Winifred Gernand

Mrs. Winifred “Winnie” Rhodes Gernand, 89, formerly of 136 Emmitsburg Road Thurmont, died Thursday May 16, 2013 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of Charles P.”Shorty” Gernand who died on May 27, 2001.
Born July 7, 1923 in rural Connecticut she was the daughter of the late Charles G. and Mary Rhodes.
Mrs. Gernand moved to Maryland as an infant, she was raised in Thurmont and was a 1942 graduate of Thurmont High School. After high school she pursued a variety of occupations prior to her marriage on October 9, 1949. In the late 1960's she started driving a school bus for Rock Creek School for the Frederick County Board of Education.
She was survived by nieces and nephews: Clinton Rhodes Jr., Pat Rhodes,
Lawrence Rhodes, Linda Blazek, Debbie Henson & Pam Sellers and their extended
families.
Mrs. Gernand is also survived by her close friends: Ruthie Rinehart, Gerry
Bowers, and Barb Barbie. She was preceded in death by her son, Charles P Gernand II on December 29, 1997 and by her 3 brothers: Charles, Earl and Clinton Rhodes Sr., nephew Mark Rhodes and niece Rhonda Rhodes, along with her special friends: Betty Lou Miskell and Ralph Baltzel.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 & 7-9pm on Sunday May 19, 2013 at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 East Main Street, Thurmont. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00pm on Monday May 20, 2013 in the funeral home chapel. Reverend Linda Lambert will officiate. Interment will be private in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Thurmont.
In Lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Thurmont Church of the Brethren, 14 N. Altamont Avenue, Thurmont, MD 21788.
