Wilmer Hagel

July 6, 1921 — November 17, 2020

Wilmer Edward Hagel, 99, of Mount Airy, Maryland, passed from this life on Tuesday, November 17, 2020.

Wilmer (Bill) was born on July 6, 1921, in Rogers, MN and was the son of the late John and Catherine Dahlheimer Hagel.  During WWII, he met and married the love of his life, Mildred “Louise” Shipley on May 17, 1949.  In 1961, they moved to Lanham-Seabrook, MD and raised their family.  This year, Bill and Louise celebrated their 71st anniversary.

Bill enlisted in the army and fought bravely for our country in WWII.  After his enlistment ended, he tried several different career paths until he landed at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Washington, D.C as an apprentice electrician.  Soon, NRL hired him to support research on metallurgy where he worked until he retired in 1981.

Bill was an avid gardener.  He loved to grow tomatoes, green beans and flowers.  When he moved to Mount Airy in 2004, he continued to plant and tend his many beautiful flowers on his front porch.

Surviving are two daughters: Janice Boarman and husband Jim of Bowie, MD and Linda Daigle and husband David of New Windsor, MD; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and sisters: Rosanna Hagel Toth, Armella Hagel and brothers Ivan, Henry, Hillard and Howard.

Burial will be private.
