Wilma Smith

Wilma M. (Walls) Smith, 83, of Boonsboro, Maryland, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, January 8, 2012 at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown.

Born on March 30, 1928 in Park Head, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Alston and Bonita (Colbert) Walls. Her husband of 43 years, Eugene "Gappy" C. Smith, preceded her in death in 1990.

Wilma grew up in Hagerstown and attended the old Hagerstown High School before meeting her husband and moving to Boonsboro.

Along with her husband, she co-owned and was a waitress at Earl's Lunch in Boonsboro until 1984. She also had worked as a receptionist at the Redwood Motel in Hagerstown.

Wilma was a member of Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church in Boonsboro where she participated in Sunday School and the Cradle Roll. She was also a member of the Boonsboro Clopper-Michael American Legion Post #10 Ladies Auxiliary and AARP.

Wilma will be fondly remembered for her kind hearted helpfulness to others. She would frequently deliver gifts, food and send notes of encouragement and friendship.

She is survived by her two daughters, Cynthia Kauffman and her husband Skip of Boonsboro, and Candace Smith of Hagerstown; and one sister, Margaret Sheppard of Hagerstown. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Barger and Shirley Knode; and one brother, William Walls.

A funeral ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. Rev. Dr. Ray Roberson and Rev. Robert G. Brennan, Jr. will officiate. Final resting place ceremonies will follow at the Boonsboro Cemetery.

Friends are invited to visit at the funeral home beginning at 12 noon on Tuesday, January 10, 2012, where the family will be present to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
