William Robert Johansen

March 16, 1933 — February 14, 2009



Mr. William Robert Johansen, died on Saturday, February 14, 2009 at age 75.

He was born in Hartford, CT on March 16, 1933 the second of four sons born to Edwin and Margerie McIlvane Johansen.

He attended schools in Unionville and Farmington CT and graduated from Farmington High School in 1951. He graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point in 1956 and was commissioned into the Army Corps of Engineers.

He married his next door neighbor and very best friend, Joan Shirley and together with her enjoyed a number of assignments overseas and in the US during a twenty year Army career. Upon retirement from the Army, he began a career as a facilities engineer at the University of Maine at Orono and later Smith College in Northhampton, MA. He retired from that job in 1991.

In addition to his wife who lives in Frederick, Bill leaves four children; Kim Day and husband Richard of Frederick, Bill Johansen and wife Johanna of Sharpsburg, Michael Johansen and wife Patricia of Charles Town, WV and Amy Valentine and husband Steven of Emmitsburg. He also leaves two brothers, Edwin Johansen of Ft Myers, Fl and Richard Johansen of Wallingford, CT seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his younger brother, David Johansen of Avon, CT.

By the grace of God, he was a Christian worshiping as a member of and elder at New Hope Church in Frederick.

Services: A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on Tuesday February 17 at Frederick Church of the Brethren, 201 Fairview Avenue, Frederick, MD 21701.
Inurnment will be private at Arlington National Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by the Stauffer Funeral Home, Frederick
