William (Bill) Stevens, Jr.

Mr. William (Bill) Marvin Stevens, Jr., 91, went home to be with the Lord on October 9, 2014.

He was born on September 6, 1923 in Washington, D.C. to Ruth and William Stevens. He spent his childhood in D.C. and Virginia. At age 19, he joined the Navy to serve in World War II. While stationed in Portland, Oregon, he met and married Ardyce Hagen after a whirlwind courtship.

Following the war, Bill left the service and the couple moved to Rockville and raised thee children, William, Ardyce and Jon. He retired in 1983 after a long career with the Washington Gas Light Company. In 1980, Bill and Ardyce moved to Mt. Airy where he lived the rest of his life.

Bill loved gardening, camping, and traveling. He was also passionate about his Christian faith and evangelism and was a member of the Mt. Airy Presbyterian Church of America for 8 years. Family and friends remember him as a witty and sociable person with an unrelenting energy and zest for life.

Bill is survived by his wife, Ardyce; his son, Bill; his daughter and son-in-law, Ardyce and Lynn Bierly; and granddaughters, Lauren andAllison Bierly.

He was predeceased by his son, Jon.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, October 16 at Stauffer Funeral Home in Mt. Airy. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 17 at the Mt. Airy Presbyterian Church, 17455 Old Frederick Rd., Mt. Airy.

Interment will follow in Taylorsville United Methodist Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Vietnam Veterans of America.
