William Irvin Smith, Jr.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William Irvin Smith, Jr. (Bill), MD FACP, on March 15, 2025.

Born in Reading, he attended the University of Pittsburgh for undergraduate and medical school. He stayed on at UPMC for Residency in Pathology with additional training in immunology. After completing his residency, he joined the faculty at Presbyterian Hospital and UPMC Mercy and later became the Chair of Pathology and director of the training program at UPMC Shadyside. During that time, he was president of the Pittsburgh Pathology Society and won numerous awards for teaching and clinical care.

In 1995, Bill became the Chair of Pathology at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, a position he held for 20 years. After retiring, he spent his later years with his wife Susan in Johns Island, South Carolina, and New Market, Maryland.

A lifelong sports enthusiast, Bill was particularly passionate about Pitt Basketball and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was known for his sense of humor, his love of life, and his unwavering commitment to family and friends. Bill’s legacy is defined by his generosity, integrity, and the impact he made on the lives of countless colleagues, students, and patients.

In addition to Susan, his loving wife of 54 years, Bill is survived by three daughters, Elizabeth “Betsy” (Paul), Emily (Anastasios), and Julie (Chris), brother Barton (Stina), along with eight grandchildren, who were the light of his life.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, March 23, All Saints Episcopal Church, 106 W. Church Street in Frederick, Maryland. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Friends of the CAC, also in Frederick.

Arrangements are entrusted to Stauffer Funeral Home.

Bill will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the many lives he touched through his work and kindness.
