William Slifer

June 30, 1921 — September 6, 2012

William Howard Slifer, 91, a resident of Homewood Retirement Center in Williamsport and formerly of Boonsboro, Maryland, passed from this life on Thursday, September 6, 2012 at the home of his daughter in Falling Waters, West Virginia.

Born on June 30, 1921, in Locust Grove, Maryland, he was the son of the late Luther Beard and Orpha May (Grimm) Slifer.  His wife of 62 years, Virginia (Reeder) Slifer, preceded him in death in 2008.
Bill was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II in the European Theatre.  He was the recipient of a Bronze Star.
He was employed as a bricklayer with various contractors throughout his life, retiring in 1981.
Bill was a member of the Clopper-Michael American Legion Post 10 in Boonsboro and Bethel United Methodist Church in Rohrersville, Maryland.
He is survived by his six children and their spouses, Dennis Slifer of Lexington, Va., Ann and Rev. William A. Herche, Jr. of Lothian, Maryland, Debra and Kirk Karn of Falling Waters, West Virginia, Dorothy and Thomas Hammond of Marriottsville, Maryland, Laura and Tilghman Hemsley of Stevensville, Maryland, and William H. Slifer, II and wife Susan, of Falling Waters; one sister, Doris Slifer Mehaffey of Hagerstown; and two brothers, James Slifer of Boonsboro and Donald Slifer of Hagerstown.  He is also survived by twelve grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Bill was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Slifer Reeder; and three brothers, Rodney L., John and Paul Slifer.
A memorial service celebrating Bill's life journey will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 15, 2012 at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro.  The Rev. William A. Herche, Jr. will officiate.  Final resting place ceremonies will follow at the Boonsboro Cemetery where military honors will be rendered by the Clopper-Michael American Legion Post 10 from Boonsboro.  Immediately following, the family will receive friends for a time of friendship and fellowship at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home.
