William (Billy) Cunningham Roberts, 73, of Falling Waters, West Virginia passed away on Friday, June 28, 2024 at home. Born on April 3rd, 1951 in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Raymond B. Roberts and Laura C. Roberts. Bill spent his childhood years swimming and playing little league baseball at Manor Country Club. He graduated from Robert E. Peary High School in 1969.
Bill was an avid and accomplished softball player traveling nationwide for tournaments well into his fifties. Football was another passion of Bill’s, having played for the Washington Redskins briefly and for the Frederick Falcons for several years. Civil War history was a favorite hobby of which he became quite knowledgeable. He loved to barbeque, watch sports, and build model cars. He also had a green thumb and loved working in his garden.
He always looked forward to the annual Thanksgiving celebration in Falling Waters where family would gather around his fire all day and into the night. No Thanksgiving passed without lots of laughs, way too much food, and shots fired from his potato gun.
He retired from the Montgomery County Public School system where he spent the majority of his career at Damascus High School. He could usually be found cruising the grounds on his golf cart or hanging in the cafeteria or PE office. Friday night lights at DHS were some of his favorite times.
Bill is survived by his loving daughters, Ashley Hawkins (Matt) of Frederick, Maryland, and Allison Meador of New Market, Maryland. He is also survived by his grandchildren who he adored; Chase, Paisley, and Ryatt Hawkins, and Cylas and Charlie Meador. He was a devoted grandfather who created a nickname, or several, for everyone. He loved to tell his grandkids stories about his life and hear about their latest sports game or practice.
He is also survived by his brother, Pete Roberts (Vonda); and nieces and nephews, Matt (Chelsea) and Kristen Roberts, Michelle Raybon (Jimmy), and Kami Berger; as well as several great nieces and nephews; and countless great friends. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Betty Georgi; his niece, Kari Epp; and his goddaughter, Sara Bellison.
Friends are welcome to join the family for a Celebration of Life at Frey’s Brewing Company in Mount Airy, Maryland beginning at 5 p.m. on Friday, August 16th. Please stop by to share a story, have a cold beer, and celebrate BR the way he would have wanted.
