William Nelson Mensh

William Nelson Mensh, 89, of Sharpsburg, MD passed away peacefully from this life at 7:27 pm on Wednesday, February 12, 2025 at Meritus Medical Center. Bill leaves behind his beloved wife of 72 years, Jean Irene Mensh, and Bill’s sister Sandy Mensh Sigmon.

Bill was born on September 10, 1935 at Sibley Hospital in Washington DC to Nelson Mensh and Helen K Ryan. He ran a newspaper route in his neighborhood, attended Eastern High School ‘52 in NE DC, joined Merrick Boys Club, where he sparred in boxing matches. He was a known great pool player, and often visited the armory with his late best friend Leonard Joy, whom he later volunteered for in the PG County Sheriff's department.

Growing up on the same street in NE DC, Bill married Jean Irene Joy when they were both 17 years of age. From DC they moved to Temple Hills in the 60s, and to Berwyn Heights in the 70s while raising four children, whom Bill is also survived by: Jeanne, William, Joseph, and John, and collectively among them, their nine grandchildren. They eventually settled in Dunkirk, Maryland, among friends and family. Among other jobs, Bill retired from working at Wonder Bread-Hostess after twenty-four years of Teamsters Union membership. Bill loved animals, and they sure did love him, both owning and cherishing animals throughout life. Bill and Jean were both active members in their community church.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 27 from 12 to 2 PM at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, February 28 at 12:30 PM at Bill and Jean’s beloved Church, Jesus the Good Shepherd Catholic Community, 1601 West Mount Harmony Road, Owings, MD. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery, Clinton, MD.
