William Neil Haraway, CLU, ChFC, 71 of Frederick MD passed away Friday, January 31, 2014 at his home surrounded by his wife Laura (Piper) DeLauder Haraway and his children.
He was born on August 18, 1942 in Denver Colorado, the son of Frank Outten and Dorothy Maguire Haraway. Bill graduated from Georgetown University and entered the financial services industry and quickly became a leader in all of his business pursuits. After beginning with Mutual of New York he later was co-founder of Benicor Associates and Consumer Dental Care ultimately establishing Haraway Financial Services in 2004.
Bill was an industry, civic and community leader throughout his life serving as President of the Jaycees, NAIFA MD, GWAIFA, as well as leadership in several charitable foundations and home owner associations. He inspired many others to become leaders as a mentor and friend and was recognized by receiving his industries highest awards: The Meyer Award; Paul Murphy Award; Hall of Fame; and the NAIFA GW Bernard Wilner Award.
The son of a Sports Writer, Bill was an avid fan of all teams in the Baltimore-Washington area as well as an avid golfer.
He is survived by his children: Kevin Haraway of Raleigh, NC; Mark Haraway (wife Sherri and children Colin and Emme) of New Market, MD and Debra Haraway (partner Jennifer Prilliman) of Raleigh, NC; and his step-children: Kecia Kane (husband Dennis and children Owen, Matthew and Carter) of Potomoc, MD; John Robert (Robbie) DeLauder (children Renae [and daughter Valerie Hughes], Samantha [and son Gabriel Oaks] and Brandon) of Knoxville, NC; and Jerry DeLauder (wife Stephanie and children Trevor and Lindsay ) of Frederick, MD; a sister Donna Haraway (husband Rusten Hogness) of Santa Cruz, CA; a brother Rick Miller-Haraway (wife Roberta)of Raleigh, NC; and many wonderful friends.
The family will receive friends at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike in Frederick MD on Wednesday, Feb 5 from 2:00-3:00 pm with a service celebrating Bill’s life at 3:00 pm.
