Mr. Willard Monroe Mabry, Sr
.
passed away November 2, 2011 at his home with his
beloved wife and family. He was born July 16, 1933 in Amelia, Virginia. He was the
son of the late Blanche Virginia Midkiff Nagao and Ernest Millard Monroe Mabry. He is
survived by his loving wife of 57 years, June Mabry, two son's, Willard Monroe Mabry
Jr
.
(Rocky), wife Linda Mabry, Frank Ashby Mabry and Debbie Jenkins, grandchildren
Justin, Brandon, Daniel, Kari and Kimberly.
His family moved to Beltsville, Maryland when he was 4 years old. He spent summers
on his grandparents farm in Amelia
,
Virginia. While there, he learned a lot about
farming. He was amazed how hams were cured hanging in the barn and how tobacco
was raised and cured.
He entered into the United States Marine Corp in 1952. He was sea going and was
aboard The Newport News. January 6, 1953, and departed from Norfolk, Virginia
underway for the Mediterranean: French Morocco, Algeria, Italy, France, Greece,
Istanbul, Turkey. August 27, 1953, underway for the Caribbean Area, Virgin Island,
Puerto Rico and Cuba. Then another tour in the Mediterranean in 1954. He was
Honorably Discharged May 11, 1955.
He was a long time and dedicated member of the American Legion Post 191. . J _
For fun, he first learned how to pitch horseshoes when he was eight years old with a
regular horseshoe and a stick of stove wood stuck in the ground. He has been pitching
horseshoes ever since. He joined the Frederick Horseshoe Club in 1988. In the early
1990s he served as President for six years. He has been a very active member until 2010
when he was diagnosed with 'mesothelioma' and was hospitalized several times in the
early part of the year. He hoped to get back to pitching in 2011. As of this year, he was
voted in as co-President
.
He was very proud to have two more generations of his family
pitching with the Club, his oldest son, Rocky and his twin granddaughters, Kari and
Kimberly
.
He was voted into the Maryland Horseshoe Pitchers Hall of Fame in 2010. He
was a member of the Horseshoe Pitching Senior Olympics, earning 8 gold and 4 silver
metals.
He was also an avid duckpin bowler
.
He was the president of the Tuesday night's men
independent bowling league at Mt
.
Airy lanes since 1983. Two times he achieved the
highest award given to a duckpin bowler.
He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Mt.Airy. He worked on the
building Committee, Greeter/Usher at 8:00 am Sunday Service and other social activities.

A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, November 7, 2011 at 10AM at the Calvary United Methodist Church, 403 S. Main Street, Mt. Airy, MD. Rev. Dennis Yocum will officiate.
Interment will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery.
