Walter Amos Smith of Frederick Maryland passed too soon on December 10, 2014 at the age of 64. Growing up in Baltimore and graduating from Patterson High School in 1968, Walter went on to Graduate with his BA from University of Maryland in 1972 and then pursued a Masters of Public Administration from the University of Baltimore in 1988.Throughout the years Walter enjoyed playing football, ice hockey and golf, he was an outstanding tennis player as well as an avid archer. His retirement as Clinical Director and Co-owner of the Frederick Institute capped a 45 year career as a renowned drug treatment and counseling professional in the Baltimore-Washington-Frederick region. His passing was preceded by his Father, Walter A Smith, Mother, Margaret E Smith, and Sister, Margaret Bankard. He is survived by his loving wife, Kelly Smith, by his daughters, Katherine Elizabeth Smith of Fulton, MD, she was the apple of his eye. Rachel Nelson of Davis, CA, son Cooper Nelson of Northridge, CA. Sisters Mary Linehan of Marysville, OH, Marie Inzana of Fallston, MD, brothers John Smith (Fran) of Hartford, MD, and William Smith (Patti) of Baltimore, MD., brother-in-law Henry Bankard of Bel Air, MD. and many nieces and nephews. Also he is survived by his ex-wife Kitty Smith of Fulton, MD., partners in business, colleagues, sports teammates and beloved friends. He is remembered as well by the patients whose lives were touched through his guidance and support. There will be a celebration of Walt's life, with music, food, and drink, on Sunday, December 21, 2014 from 12:00 noon to 2:00pm at Ten Oaks Ballroom, 5000 Signal Bell Ln, Clarksville, MD 21029. The family asks those wishing to memorialize him may consider contributions in his name to the Oxford House, 1010 Wayne Ave Ste 300, Silver Spring, MD 20910 or to the Kline Hospice House 7000 Kimmel Rd.
