Walter Michael Smith, 59, of Rohrersville, MD passed away on Friday, December 15, 2017 at his home after a long battle with cancer.
Born on July 19, 1958 in Washington, DC, Walter proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps after high school. Following his military service, he worked 7 years as a police officer for the City of Mount Rainier, then another 24 years as an officer for the DC Metropolitan Police Department from which he recently retired. He also spent much of his spare time serving as a volunteer fire fighter with the Cottage City department.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, John Walter and Mary F. (Gisner) Smith, and by his wife, Cathleen Foster-Smith, as well as 1 niece and 3 nephews.
He is survived by a host of loving family members, including two sisters – Jeni Smith Stepanek and Amy Smith Lohr, stepchildren – Caitlin McClary, Lauren Lerian, and Jared Foster, girlfriend – Sue Gurskey, grandchildren – Brooke Albertson, Lillianna Lerian, Ella Lerian, and Teagan McClary, nieces, nephew, great-niece, 8 great-nephews, and dear family friends. He will also be greatly missed by his two emotional support dogs – Mikey and Brandi.
Walter will be remembered as an avid golf enthusiast, for his incredible sense of humor and wit, and for his gentle heart and kindness which touched family members, friends, and countless others.
The family will receive friends at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro on Saturday, December 30, 2017 from 2-3PM where a funeral service will begin at 3PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Hospice of Washington Co Maryland or Last Chance Animal Rescue (Waldorf MD).
Interment will follow at Boonsboro Cemetery.
