Walter Brown

October 31, 1925 — February 18, 2014

Mr. Walter C. Brown, 88, formerly of Mt. Airy, Maryland died on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at his home in Harrisonburg, Virginia.  He was the beloved husband of Mary Elizabeth Brown and father of Bradley Dean Brown and Nancy Brown Nichols.

Born October 31, 1925 in Mt. Airy, Maryland to Raymond G. and Edna M. Brown, Walter earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Virginia Tech in 1947.  After enlisting, he served in the Army Air Corp from 1943 until 1945.

On August 30, 1947 Walter married Mary Elizabeth Pruitt in Roanoke, Virginia.  They returned to Mt. Airy where Walter worked for Butler Brothers.  In 1949 he began working for the Bank of Damascus as a clerk-teller.  Walter was elected to the bank’s Board of Directors in 1963 and named President and Chief Executive Officer in 1983.  He retired in 1987 after 38 years at the bank.  During his banking career he served as president of the Blue Ridge Conference of the Bank Administration Institute and president of the Montgomery County Bankers Association.  After retiring, Walter served on the FCNB Bank Advisory Board from 1994 to 1999.

Walter was an active member of Calvary United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Damascus Rotary Club.  He also served five years as president of the Mt. Airy Little League.  An avid tennis player all his life, Walter enjoyed many hours on the court with his friends.

Walter is survived by his wife of 66 years, Elizabeth, his daughter, Nancy Nichols and her husband Garry of Harrisonburg, Virginia, his daughter-in-law, Roni Seiff Brown of Orlando, Florida and four grandchildren, Stephanie and Danielle Brown of Tampa, Florida, Brian Nichols of Boston, Massachusetts and Amy Elizabeth Nichols of Blacksburg, Virginia.  Also left to mourn are three siblings, Virginia Swain, Florence Clower and David Brown and their families.  Walter was preceded in death by his son, Bradley Dean Brown.

A memorial service will be held at Calvary United Methodist Church in Mt. Airy at 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 22.  The Rev. Steve Larsen will officiate. A private interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery in Mount Airy.
