Mr. Wallace P. Mercer, III, 80, of Point of Rocks, died Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center, after a courageous, yearlong battle with bladder cancer. He was the husband of Edna Marie Mercer. They were married for 58 years.

Born October 15, 1931 in Woodbury, NJ, he was the son of the late Wallace P., Jr., and Jean A. Byrnes Mercer. He was a 1950 Graduate of Collingswood High School, Collingswood, NJ.

Mr. Mercer worked as an engineer in the field of communications. He was a Korean War Veteran of the United States Navy, having served from 1951 to 1955.  He was employed by US Air Force, US Naval Laboratories, Atlantic Research Corporation and in 1968 joined Comsat Laboratories.  He retired from Comsat Laboratories in 1988.  During his retirement, he enjoyed helping others in the Frederick County community.

He was of the Catholic faith. He was an active member of the Point of Rocks Ruritan Club for 40 years, and was a Boy Scout Master for 12 years in Pt. of Rocks. He was a member of the Frederick Amateur HAM Radio Club and volunteered with the Red Cross with communications during flooding in Point of Rocks.  When his family lived in Woodbridge, VA; he was a PTA President, PTA Council President, chairman of the local recreation committee, Member of the Northern Virginia Community College Steering Committee, and the local Boy Scout and Cub Scout Troop.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Jeanmarie Bartlett of Frederick, Eileen Markum and husband, Ronnie, Sr., of Supply, NC, and Wallace P. Mercer, IV, of Pt. of Rocks; five grandchildren, Thomas E. Mercer, II and fiancée, Ashley Bradford, of Summerville, SC; Tamara McCann and husband, Sean, of Ashburn, VA; Ronnie J. Markum, Jr., of Wilmington,  NC; Michael S. Markum of Raleigh, NC; and James A. Bartlett of Frederick; one great-granddaughter, Annalyse Mercer; two brothers, Robert Mercer and wife, Mary Ann, and William E. Mercer and wife, Patricia, both of New Jersey; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Elizabeth Ann Mercer in 1956; a son, Thomas E. Mercer in 2007, and an infant granddaughter, Tabitha Mercer in 1983.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28, 2012 at Stauffer Funeral Homes, P.A., 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29 from the funeral home chapel. Officiating will be Deacon John L. Manley.

Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
