Virginia Swain

February 7, 1917 — August 20, 2017

Virginia Leatherwood Swain, 100, of Mt. Airy, passed from this life on Sunday, August 20, 2017, at Lorien Life Center in Mt. Airy. She was the former wife of Wesley G. Leatherwood and Justin M. Swain, both deceased.

Born on February 7, 1917, in Mt. Airy, she was the daughter of the late Raymond G. and Edna Matthews Brown.

Virginia was a 1933 graduate of Mt. Airy High School and of Blue Ridge College Class of 1935. She worked as a secretary in private industry and for 17 additional years with Naval Air Systems Command in Washington, DC, where she received a Sustained Superior Performance Award. Her hobbies included Ballroom Dancing; needlework and quilting which earned many First Place Ribbons at the Great Frederick Fair. Virginia was a life member of Calvary United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her son, Robert Leatherwood of Cockeysville, grandchildren: Anna Margaret Nichols of Owings Mills and David Leatherwood of Manhattan, NY; a great granddaughter, Lia Anna Boyle of Owings Mills; and a sister, Florence R. Clower of Maurertown, VA, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Virginia was preceded in death by four brothers: Gwynne Brown, Preston Brown, Walter C. Brown and David D. Brown.

The family will honor Virginia's life by receiving friends from 12-1 PM on Thursday, August 24, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mt. Airy where services will begin at 1:00 PM. Interment will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Mt. Airy.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Calvary United Methodist Church, 403 S. Main St., Mt. Airy, MD 21771.
