Mrs. Virginia " Ginny" Sherman Smith, 87, of Mt.Airy died on Saturday, September 25, 2010, at her residence. She was the wife of the late Robert E. "Frog" Smith, who died on February 25, 2009, they were married for 60 years.
Born on August 9, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Mortimer and Amanda Elizabeth Rimby Sherman. Virginia was born and raised in Mt.Airy and was a 1940 graduate of Mt.Airy High School. She worked a short time for the railroad, the Acme food store in Mt.Airy and retired after many years as the Mt. Airy Middle School cafeteria manager. Mrs. Smith was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church as well as a life member and past president of both the American Legion Gold Star Post 191, Auxiliary and the Mt. Airy Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary. Her life long service to the Mt.Airy community earned her many accolades including: Xi Phi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Woman of the year in 1974, Mt. Airy Rotary Club Citizen of the Year in 1989, and she was inducted into the Mt. Airy Hall of Fame in 2002.
Surviving are two children: Kaye Moxley and husband Jim of Flinton, PA, and Michael Smith and wife Lisa of Mt. Airy; 4 grandchildren: Kristina and Jeff Hines of New Market, Gregory Dodson and Karina Rodriquez of Gaithersburg, Ryan Smith of Chicago and Chad Smith of Mt. Airy; a great-grand son, Dominick Dodson. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by 1 brother and 5 sisters: Edith Eader, Evelyn Morris, Leonard "Pee Wee" Sherman, Lillian Mack, Ann Snouffer and Betty Sherman.
The family will receive friends from 2-7 PM on Wednesday, September 29, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd. in Mt. Airy where an American Legion Memorial Service will begin at 5:00 PM and Memorial Service by the Mt. Airy Volunteer Fire Company will begin at 6:00 PM.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM on Thursday, September 30, in the funeral home with Rev. Wallace Lusk officiating.
Interment will take place in Pine Grove Cemetery, Mt. Airy with her grandsons: Ryan Smith, Chad Smith, Gregory Dodson, Jeff Hines, son-law Jim Moxley and friend Doug Henley serving as pallbearers; Lee Fogle, Tony Esworthy, Donald Norris and Mac Molesworth will serve as honorary pallbearers.
