Mrs. Virginia Jewell Pollok, 85, passed away Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She is survived by her husband of almost 62 years of marriage, Dr. Nicholas Pollok, III. They have been residents of Braddock Heights since coming to Maryland from Hampton, VA in 1952.
Mrs. Pollok was born in Arlington, VA, the daughter of the late Joseph and Myra Henderson Jewell of Dover, N.H. Virginia (Ginny) graduated valedictorian of her high school class of 1944, at the age of 16 and was awarded a full scholarship to the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA. Graduating in 1948, she earned a B.S. in Business Administration with Honors.
Her career positions initially included that of an executive secretary with the Federal Government National Space Administration, Langley AFB, Hampton, VA. In 1952, she transferred to the Biological Defense Center at Ft. Detrick, serving as Administrative Assistant to the Pilot Plant Director, retiring in 1956 to raise a family. In 1977, she became Administrative Assistant to the Hood College Alumni/Publications Office, until her retirement in 1993. Civic activities included active membership in the Braddock Heights Fire Dept. Auxiliary, Braddock Heights Community Association, and most especially years of enjoyment of family membership of swimming activities at the Braddock Heights Pool.
Surviving are her husband Nicholas; her son Dr. Brian Pollok and wife Amy of Warrenton, VA, and their two sons Christopher and Benjamin; daughter, Susan Virginia of Frederick; and younger daughter, Lynne P. Soper and husband Karl, and their three children William, Claire and Robert, of Mt. Airy, MD. She was preceded in death by two brothers Earl Jewell of Beaver Falls, PA and Robert Jewell of Hampton, VA.
The family wishes to express sincere appreciation for the exceptional care and comfort provided by hospice staff at Frederick Memorial Hospital during the last days of Ginny’s life, especially during our daily moments of vigil with her. With great sorrow and pardonable pride, we will never forget her love of family, devoted care, love of learning and responsible citizenship. Truly a legacy of life’s fulfillment.
The family will have a private inurnment service at her parent’s gravesite in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Ginny’s honor may be made to the Montevue Home Auxiliary of Frederick.
