Mrs. Virginia K. Ludder, 81, of Mount Airy, Maryland, passed away Friday, July 9, 2010 at the Kline Hospice House. She was the wife of the late Henry Ludder.
Born January 7, 1929 in Little Rock, Arkansas, she was the daughter of the late James Roy and Virginia Merriman Kuydendall.
Mrs. Ludder was an adventurous and exceptional woman: as a young woman she learned to fly, studied for a career in medicine, and moved from her home in Arkansas to New York City. After a 35-year career in hematology, working and teaching at Flushing Hospital in Queens, NY, she retired at 70 and moved to Maryland. She was an active member of St. James Episcopal Church, serving on the Altar Guild and at the St. James Thrift Shop. She was a Docent at the Civil War Museum of Medicine in Frederick and volunteered at Kline Hospice House, Partners in Care, and the Red Cross.
Mrs. Ludder was a wonderful mother and loved spending time with her family and friends in addition to continually exploring avenues for service to others through volunteer work.
Mrs. Ludder is survived by five children: Julie Martin and husband Paul, Christine Irvin and husband Kenneth, Karen Barber and husband Mark, David Ludder and wife Antonietta, and James Ludder. Her legacy includes her 14 grandchildren: Amanda, Nicole, Cody, Benjamin, Samantha, Adam, Emily, Brent, Rebekkah, Dakota, Rachelle, Rhiannon, Malena and Connor.
A Memorial service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church, 1307 N. Main Street, Mt. Airy on Saturday, July 31, at 1:00 p.m.
Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1393 Progress Way, Eldersburg, MD 21784 or to the Civil War Museum of Medicine in Frederick.
