Virginia Thomas Horman (Granny), a lifelong resident of Frederick County for over 101, years passed away on Sunday, January 16,
2011 at Tranquillity at Fredericktowne Assisted Living in Frederick. She was the wife of the late Russell Z. Horman, a former county commissioner of Frederick County.
Born April 7, 1909 in Adamstown, MD she was the daughter of the late Dr. Joseph G Thomas and the late Dorothy Edith Utz Thomas.
She was a special person to everyone who knew her. Besides being a devoted wife and mother she was a caregiver, a mentor, role model and an outstanding teacher. One of her legacies to her family was a positive outlook on life. She truly always saw the silver lining.
Virginia was a teacher in Frederick County for many years. She started her teaching career in a one room school house in Araby and retired at Carroll Manor Elementary School.
She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, the Frederick County Retired Teachers Association and the Buckeystown Homemakers.
She is survived by her three sons, Russell Terrance Horman and wife Bonnie of Myersville, MD, Dr. Joseph Thomas Horman and wife Judy of Frederick, MD and George Timothy Horman and wife Joan of Frederick, MD, eight grandchildren, Rebecca Marrone and husband Rick, Joe Horman, Brian Horman and wife Kim, Melissa Bolden and husband Wayne, Drew Horman and wife Jaime, Dr. Jennifer McDonald and husband Jason, Marshall Horman and wife Kristin, Justin Horman and wife Erin, thirteen great grandchildren, Daniel, Austin and Catherine Marrone, Macy and Brianna Horman, Avery and Aiden Horman, Kalen and Quinn Bolden, Isaac Mikulas and Noah Horman, and Caroline and Ella McDonald.
She will also be remembered by her “adopted daughters”, Edith Albrecht and Robin Fifer Nelson, her numerous nieces, nephews, all of her special friends, other family members, and the staff members and her friends from Tranquillity at Fredericktowne Assisted Living.
She is preceded in death by her two sisters, Dorothy Albrecht and Constance Hammack.
The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick on Thursday, January 20
th
from 7:00-9:00PM. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 21
st
at 10:30 AM at the Mt. Olivet Mausoleum Chapel, 515 South Market Street in Frederick with Rev. Dr. Joseph R. Foster officiating.
Entombment will be in the Mount Olivet Mausoleum.
