On March 9, 2025 Vincent Scott Galbraith (Scott) passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family. Scott is survived by daughters Heather and husband Sean Gramm, Kathryn and husband Hamed Mahdavi; grandsons Timothy Krantz and Jakob Gramm; and siblings John and wife Gina Galbraith, Meg Galbraith, and Paul and wife Venice Galbraith; as well as many other nieces, nephews, and other family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles & Elizabeth Galbraith.
Born in Memphis to Charles and Elizabeth Galbraith in 1949, Scott graduated from Tennessee Technological University in 1972 with a degree in Engineering. From there he built a successful career, during which he earned numerous accolades and professional honors. He started at the Federal Communications Commission, followed by a move into the private sector at RCC, RAM Communications, and US Tower Services. Scott was fortunate enough to end his career in his most favored role as the Spectrum Manager at NASA Goddard, from which he retired in June 2020. While in his role at NASA, he completed work that was the pride of his career, playing a vital role in virtually all missions that fly in space, ensuring they could successfully communicate through their microwave lifeline to their earth based control centers. Scott was not only a subject matter expert in the field of RF communications engineering, but he also possessed masterful skills in professional negotiating and diplomacy. Those were key in representing NASA in an arm of the United Nations, the International Communications Union, creating policy that enabled successful communications for countless missions.
His passion for radio communications began in high school as a Hobby Amateur Radio operator. Scott was first licensed in Tennessee in 1964 as WN4ROI. Subsequently he held WB4BGU and W0VSG before obtaining his present callsign, N3OK, as an Extra Class licensee. This is a hobby he pursued through the remainder of his life. Scott was a member of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), the Potomac Valley Radio Club (PVRC), the Navy/Marine Corps Military Affiliate Radio System (Navy/Marine Corps MARS - call sign NNN0OPY), the Air Force MARS organization (call sign AFA3PY) and the Maryland MARS Incorporated organization (MMARSI). His daughters fondly recall his collection of call signs from other operators he spoke to around the world and teaching his young grandson Tim to send out a “CQ” call.
Along with Amateur radio, Scott was an avid motorcycle enthusiast. He completed two cross-country trips, following both historic Route 66 and The Pony Express Route. An active member of the Frederick HOG chapter, his Harleys were his pride bikes since the 70’s. He also enjoyed camping trips with his family, sports shooting, and skiing.
But, above all of these things, Scott was a proud father to his two daughters, and grandfather to his two grandsons. He diligently worked to provide them with all of their needs and wants. Scott took joy in providing for those he loved. His unconditional love and support will be greatly missed.
