Mr. Vernon T. Poole, 91, a resident of Lorien of Mt. Airy and formerly of Frostburg, MD died Sunday, November 4, 2007 at Carroll County Hospital in Westminster. He was the husband of the late Marion Plummer Poole.
Born in Rochester, KY on April 24, 1916, he was the son of the late Edward K. and Effie Jones Poole. He attended Richardsville High School in Kentucky and the University of Western Kentucky. He was a retired salesman with Belknap Hardware Manufacturing with 31 years of service.
Mr. Poole served in the Merchant Marines during WW II as a chief boatswain. He crossed the Atlantic Ocean six times and the Pacific Ocean one time with ammunition for American troops. He was awarded the Asiatic and Pacific Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal.
Frostburg, Maryland was Mr. Poole's home for over 50 years. He was active in the Rotary International Foundation, receiving the Paul Harris Fellow Award in 1991. He served as President of the Frostburg Rotary Club and participated on many committees over the years.
Mr. Poole was also recognized as one of Maryland's Outstanding Senior Citizens. He was a 32nd degree Mason in Mountain Lodge #099 in Frostburg, MD.
Always active in church ministries, he served as Sunday School Superintendent at Frostburg United Methodist Church for many years. He studied and taught many Christian education and Bible classes during his lifetime.
In 1992 Vernon moved to Leesburg, FL and spent eleven wonderful years being active in shuffle board, bocce ball, tennis, softball, gardening and various book and study clubs.
While in Leesburg, he also organized and facilitated a group of people to provide free transportation for members of his community who needed rides to hospital and doctor visits. In 2003, in order to be closer to family, he moved to Lorien in Mt. Airy. He remained actively involved in all the activities there and will be missed by his family and many faithful friends.
Survivors include his three daughters; Carol Fresh and husband Larry of Reisterstown, Lana Harper and husband Wallace of Mount Airy, and Kathryn Prichard and husband Robert of Frederick; five grandchildren, Lane Fresh, Melanie Fresh Mitchell, Todd Harper, Corinne Harper and Bryan Prichard; six great grandchildren; Samantha Fresh, Benjamin Fresh, Melanie Harper, Micah Harper, Ella Mitchell, and Carly Mitchell. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Wayne K. and Ferdinand Poole.

Services: Memorial services will be held on Saturday, November 10, 2007 at 10:00 AM at Lorien of Mt. Airy, 713 Midway Avenue, Mt. Airy, MD 21771. The family will also meet friends at Frostburg United Methodist Church, Main Street in Frostburg, Maryland, at 3:30pm.
