Tracy Massey

d. August 20, 2014

Mrs. Tracy Allyson Massey, 54, of Union Bridge, MD passed away Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at the Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the loving wife of Craig Massey and mother of daughter Jordan Lee Massey and son Justin Tyler Massey.
Born on July 17, 1960 in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of Zoe Hereford and the late Jordan Pepper.
Tracy graduated from Wootton High School in 1978. She found a career as a bank teller with Bank of America for many years thereafter. In 1991 she met her future husband Craig while walking their dogs in the open spaces adjacent to their Germantown homes. Together they conspired to move where she could keep her horses in the back yard and let the dogs off their leashes.  After a short layover at a rented property in Clarksburg, they were married on October 22, 1993 while waiting to close on a small farm in Union Bridge. Once there, both the family and the menagerie began to grow. Daughter Jordan was born in July 1994 and son Justin in May 1996. At times there were several dozens of creatures from budgerigars to tarantulas and just about every house pet and domestic animal in between. Tracy was fiercely protective of her children, only working outside the home if it did not require leaving them in someone else’s care. She enjoyed taking them to their various activities and was unabashedly proud of their accomplishments in academics, sports, 4H, FFA, and Engineering Club.  When Justin was a Cub Scout, she enjoyed her time as a leader of his pack.  Her passion for horseback riding was passed on to Jordan whom she loved to take to riding lessons, horse shows, or just sit and watch in the yard.
Tracy was a strong supporter of Craig’s military career in the Air National Guard. She valiantly held down the fort during his deployments to Iraq in 2005 and Afghanistan in 2009, not to mention one weekend per month and two weeks per year the two decades of their life together. Conversely, her principal aggravation was with his unfinished home improvement projects and clutter around the house and in the barn.
Tracy loved to collect chicken, cow, pig, and especially horse curios. Her favorite was The Trail of Painted Ponies figurine collection, which became a family tradition as an annual Christmas gift.
In addition to her husband and children she is survived by her mother Zoe Hereford and stepfather Reggie Hereford; grandmother Freda Epstein; brother Robert Pepper, his wife Amy, and their two sons Nolan and Nathan; sister Dr. Lauren Pepper, her husband Dr. Brad Wolf, and their two children Ava and Noah; sister Terri Wilson, her husband Bruce, and their three daughters Danielle, Melissa, and Jesse; two brothers Christopher Epstein and Chuck Hereford;  mother-in-law Barbara Massey; sisters-in-law Karen Kotewicz and Suzanne Massey; brother-in-law Tom Massey; six dogs; six cats; seven horses; six goats; ten cows; two turkeys; and one chicken.
Preceding her in death are many pets of various species, but three with special places in her heart were her horse Honest Remark, Labrador retriever Yeller Dog, and pot-bellied pig Winston Smithfield.
Tracy was allergic to flowers so in lieu thereof please consider making a memorial donation to one of her favorite charities such as Colon Cancer Alliance , The Puppy Rescue Mission, Inc. , Frederick County Animal Control , or Days End Farm Horse Rescue, Inc .
Interment will be private.
