Toney Locklear

March 27, 1940 — August 11, 2018

Mr. Toney Locklear, 78, of Woodbine, Maryland died Saturday, August 11, 2018 while under Hospice care at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was surrounded by family and died peacefully. He was the husband of the late Marta Lourdes (Tamargo) Locklear, who predeceased him on March 14, 2014. They were married 45 years at the time of her passing.

Born March 27, 1940 in Lumberton, North Carolina, he was the 4th of 15 children born to the late Odell and Sadie Mae (Dial) Locklear.

While growing up in Lumberton, Toney learned the value of hard work by helping his family farm tobacco and cotton. As a young adult, Toney moved to Maryland where he found work in construction, helping to build many of the parkways and highways of the D.C. metropolitan area that we drive today. In 1970, he joined Giant Food and stayed with them for 32 years. He counted his co-workers and fellow Teamsters as some of his closest friends, staying in touch with them well into retirement.

Toney and Marta married August 10, 1968. They eventually settled in Woodbine, where they made their home for nearly 40 years.  Toney and his wife shared an enthusiasm for traveling -- whether that meant touring throughout Europe, taking a drive to the beach, or simply hopping in the RV for a weekend camping trip. Marta passed away in 2014 from Multiple Sclerosis-related complications. For the last four years of her life Toney was Marta’s primary care giver.  He lovingly took care of her needs without complaint.

Toney loved spending time with his grandchildren. He had a knack for calming crying babies and was always willing to change a diaper or two.  He enjoyed working in his yard and took great pride in his garden and landscaping projects.  Toney will be remembered for his contagious smile, readiness to help anyone out, his willingness to talk to anyone, and his many unique phrases.

He is survived by three daughters, Yvonne Marie-Locklear Weed and husband, Robert, of Westminster, MD and their children, Patrisha and Logan; Dannette Marie Locklear Alpern and husband, Adam, of Mt. Airy, MD and their children, Dylan and Delilah; Margaux Marie Jessup and husband, David, of Washington, DC and their son, Antonio.  Toney is also survived by ten siblings, Fred Locklear of Hyattsville, MD; Alice Rea Lehocky of Tarpon Springs, FL; Rodney Locklear of Essex, MD; James Earl Locklear of Lumberton; Mary Magaline Myers of Ijamsville, MD; Betty Sue Prevatte of St. Pauls, NC; Louie Locklear, Elwood Locklear, and Marie Faye Locklear, all of Lumberton; and Jerry Locklear of Falling Waters, WV.  He is loved and will be missed by numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws, and great friends.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by four siblings, Barbara Locklear, Patsy Ann Locklear-Hardin, Earnest Locklear, and Stedwell Locklear.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 16, 2018 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD. A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 17 from the funeral home chapel with Deacon Gerald Jennings officiating.

Inurnment will immediately follow in St. Peter's Church Cemetery, Libertytown, MD.

The family will host a Celebration of Life reception at 1:30 p.m. at the FSK American Legion Post 11 in Frederick.
