Tilden Barnes

d. February 5, 2015

Tilden F. Barnes, Jr, age 82, died February 5, 2015 at his home in Mt. Airy.  A native of the city of Baltimore, son of the late Tilden Fletcher (Sr.) and Nita Jane (Eckenrode) Barnes, he moved to Union Bridge with his family as a teenager.  He later enlisted in the army during the Korean War. It was during this time while stationed at Ft. Devens in Massachusetts, that he met and married Gertrude M. Baile, who recently preceded him in death.  They were married 58 years.

Upon leaving the army in 1959, he moved with his family to Mt. Airy, MD, where he resided the rest of his life. While a civilian worker at Ft. Detrick, he spent several months in Vietnam for the Army Security Agency. He joined the Mt. Airy Volunteer Fire Department, receiving several recognitions for his outstanding service from 1967-70, climaxed by being named “Fireman of the Year” in 1969. After 18 years as a professional firefighter for the National Bureau of Standards (now the NIST) in Gaithersburg, he retired from the Commerce Department in 1987.  He loved to travel, and in later years, particularly enjoyed his railroad-centered hobby, including collecting model trains, and was able to identify different locomotives just by listening to their sounds.  Mr. Barnes was a long time member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He is survived by his six children: T. Fletcher Barnes, III of Blue Creek, OH; Richard L. Barnes of Martinsburg, WV; Robert M. Barnes of Mt. Airy, MD; Paul N. Barnes of Silver Spring, MD; Sarah J. Frischknecht of Amherst, NH; and Harry H. Barnes of Amherst, NH; nineteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren.  He was the brother of Kenneth L. Barnes of Baltimore, MD and the late Minnie M. Lee of Union Bridge, MD.  He also leaves many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 pm on February 21, 2015 at the Mt. Airy Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 7255 Ridge Rd, Mt Airy, MD, with a graveside service to follow.
