Thomas V. Pitts

Mr. Thomas V. Pitts, 86, of Frederick died on Monday, September 29, 2008, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was husband of Marian Louise Grove Pitts, his wife of 64 years.

Born on December 6, 1921, in Tulsa, OK he was the son of the late John M. and Anna Mae Hoyle Pitts.

Mr. Pitts entered the U.S. Army in 1939 and retired in 1962 as a Chief Warrant Officer after a 23 year career. He was then employed by the National Security Agency at Ft. Meade, retiring in 1977. During his military career Tom received many overseas assignments including England and Korea. In WWII he served in the European Theater of Operations, participating in the Rhineland and Central European campaigns where he earned 2 battle stars. He was awarded the U.S. Army Commendation Metal along with numerous campaign and service ribbons.

After his retirement from the Army, and being a licensed pilot, he was associated for many years with the Frederick Squadron of the Maryland Civil Air Patrol where he served as a mission pilot and Squadron Operations Officer, attaining the rank of Captain. He was a member of the F.S.K. American Legion, Post #11, Elks Lodge #684 and the Catoctin Club all of Frederick. Mr. Pitts was also a member of NARFE and served on the Board of Directors of AARP.

He enjoyed being a amateur radio operator and was a member of the American Radio Relay League.

Surviving in addition to his wife are 2 children: John T. Pitts of Shannondale, WV and Donna L. Goggin and husband Bill of Merced, CA; 2 granddaughters: Regina and Katy of Sacremento, CA 3 brothers: Paul J. Pitts and Kenneth Pitts of Muskogee, OK and Jack M. Pitts of Rogers, AR.

Mr. Pitts was preceded in death by a brother James Pitts and sisters: Doris Fletcher and Virginia Lee.

Services: Graveside services and interment will held at 11:00 AM on Friday, October 3, at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, 515 S. Market St., Frederick with Rev. Lloyd Fuss officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
