Stephen Paul Hopko

Mr. Stephen Paul Hopko, of Frederick, passed away Monday, Nov. 30, 2009, at his home. He was the husband of Alexandra Tyron-Hopko.

Born Jan. 18, 1927, in St. John's, Michigan, he was the son of the late Joseph and Mary Kandle Hopko.

Mr. Hopko grew up in the St. Johns area and was the advertising manager and publisher of the Clinton County News before moving to Idaho, where he lived for 20 years before moving to Frederick.

He was a member of the Alumni Associations of Michigan State University and Idaho State University, where he taught for several years.

He retired as a clinical sociologist at State Hospital South in Idaho. While in Idaho, he was active and in the deaconate program of the Episcopal Diocese of Idaho.

He was a master gardener, started an herb business and was a vendor at the farmers market in Frederick and in Washington for 15 years.

He was a World War II veteran, an avid fly fisherman and golfer.

In addition to his wife, Alexandra, he is survived by his daughter, Melissa Hopko of Frederick; three sisters, Mary Ewing and Helen Glazier, both of St. John's, Mich., and Betty St. Pierre of Clearwater, Fla.; and sister-in-law, Marlene Hopko of St. Johns.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, John Hopko and Joe Hopko; and one sister, Margaret Gurski.

He will also be remembered by his numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
