Stephen Frederick Schumacher, age 48, of Lyons, CO and formerly of Thurmont, MD died suddenly and unexpectedly on Monday, February 20th in Boulder, CO. Born on September 22, 1963 in Frederick, MD, Mr. Schumacher was the son of Clara Stull Schumacher of Thurmont, MD and the late Frederick G. Schumacher. Besides his mother, Mr. Schumacher is survived by his wife of seven years, Jennifer Misner Schumacher, and their beloved dog, Sparky, of Lyons, CO; as well as numerous cousins from the Stull Family, and countless friends.
Mr. Schumacher was a graduate of Catoctin High School, Class of 1981, and a graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park where he received dual degrees in mechanical and electrical engineering. Mr. Schumacher was a member of the Alpha Alpha Chapter of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity in College Park, MD where he also served as a chapter adviser for a number of years following his graduation.
Mr. Schumacher spent his entire career working as an engineer in the aerospace industry, having worked for Swales & Associates in Beltsville, MD; Ball Aerospace in Boulder, CO; and most recently, SEAKR Engineering in Denver, CO. During the course of his career, Mr. Schumacher contributed to numerous projects and space missions. One of his most notable accomplishments was his work in the design and development of a specialized torque wrench which was utilized by astronauts in the mission to repair the Hubble Space Telescope.
Mr. Schumacher was a bright and gifted man with a charismatic, witty personality and a zeal for life. As an avid outdoorsman, Mr. Schumacher enjoyed rock climbing, kayaking, tubing, bicycling, and hiking. He also enjoyed cooking and barbequing, and shared with his wife, Jennifer, a love of photography—something which he inherited from his father.
Mr. Schumacher had recently revived his Christian faith in the midst of some challenges he was facing; returning to church, reading the Bible, praying, and looking to the Lord for strength. He was indeed a loving and devoted husband, son, cousin, and dear friend who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Arrangements are being handled by Stauffer Funeral Homes, PA. Visitation will be held from 3:00–5:00 p.m. and from 7:00–9:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 1st at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main Street, Thurmont, MD. A celebration of Mr. Schumacher’s life will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday, March 2nd at 11:00am with Mr. Schumacher’s life-long friend, the Rev. Father James K. Hamrick, pastor of St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church, officiating. Interment will follow at the Weller’s United Methodist Church Cemetery in Thurmont, MD.
