Stephen Leigh Duvall (Steve), 72 of Damascus, Maryland, passed peacefully from this life on March 5, 2025. Born on July 30, 1952, he was the son of the late Edward Boyer and Ruth Oland Duvall.
Steve worked for Kettler Brothers, Inc. for many years. He was a locksmith, a collector of relics, and enjoyed attending auctions. If you needed help or had a problem he would be there. He purchased property where he built his forever home and fulfilled his dream of starting a Christmas tree farm. He spent hours planting and meticulously maintaining his trees, ensuring customers would only purchase the finest. His family was so important to him, and he especially enjoyed times spent together helping him at the tree farm in December. Steves’ skills led him to creating beautiful Christmas wreaths made from greenery found on the farm and treasured by all who received them.
Steve saw the beauty in nature and captured those moments in time with the many photographs that he took, especially bluebirds, hummingbirds and woodpeckers. One of Steve’s proudest accomplishments was having one of his photographs of a bluebird in a nesting box published in the Virginia Wildlife Magazine, March 1985 issue and that same photo being placed on the cover of the Audubon Workshop (The Wild Bird Specialists) in the Spring 1988 magazine. After publication of the photo in both magazines, he received many requests from people across the country asking for a print of that picture. Steve also had a photo of a Red-Belly Woodpecker published in a 1991 (Landmark) Birds Calendar for the month of November. He made many bluebird boxes which are still being used to this day.
Through his love of the great outdoors, Steve became proficient in metal detecting. He found an abundance of treasures throughout the years, many consisting of jewelry and even reuniting a class ring which had been lost for 50 years, to its owner.
Surviving are his siblings, Lin Phelps and husband Barry, Allen Duvall and wife Hilda, Deborah Duvall, Karen Jordan and husband John, and Tim Duvall and wife Kim. Also surviving are his beloved nieces and nephews Chris Phelps and wife Amy, Jonathan Phelps, Lance Duvall and wife Alanna, Valerie Pickett and husband Eric, Hailey Humbert and husband Aaron, Lindsay McCollum and husband Aaron, Grant Duvall and wife Chloe. He is also survived by 3 great nieces and 1 great nephew.
Funeral services and interment will be private.
