Stanley Mathias

April 20, 1936 — March 27, 2017

Stanley Lewis Mathias, also known as “Papa”, “Pop”, and “Daddy”, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on March 27, 2017.
Stanley was born April 20, 1936 and raised in Gaithersburg, Maryland. He began serving his country in 1958 when he joined the US Army and was stationed in France until 1960. The most significant year of his life, however, was certainly 1962 when he married the love of his life, Becky Melvin. That same year, he opened his first Sinclair gas station and later started the first towing company in Gaithersburg. By 1980 he had expanded his business with the opening of Mathias Servicenter and later launched a Mercedes and Volvo center.
In 2009 Stanley retired and sold his business to spend time with his family.  Unfortunately, in 2010, he lost his dear wife to cancer. He spent the next several years with his daughter and her family.
Stanley moved to New Market, MD in 2012 and became a part of a senior living community.  He enjoyed spending time with his friends and his daughter and son-in-law, but most especially with his grandchildren, Hannah and Brett, “his babies”.
In addition to his daughter and son-in-law, Kristin and Mark Tulip, and grandchildren, Hannah and Brett Tulip, he is survived by his sister, Jane King and husband Thomas;sister-in-law Faye Mathias, brother-in-law, James Melvin and wife June; sisters-in-law Eleanor Carlin and Marie Stanton; brother-in-law, John Melvin and wife Kristie; brother-in-law Garland Johnson and wife Carole; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Elsie Mathias; wife, Lillian Rebecca Mathias; brother, Wilmer Mathias; sister-in-law, Theresa Johnson; and brother-in-law, Doug Carlin.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 2, 2017 from 3:00-5:00p.m. at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD 21702. The funeral service will be held on April 3, 2017 at 11:00a.m. at Bush Creek Church of the Brethren, 4821 Green Valley Road, Monrovia, MD 21770. Fellowship will follow immediately after the service. Interment will be in St. Mary's Catholic Shrine in Barnesville, MD.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lustgarten Foundation, 1111 Stewart Ave., Bethpage, NY 11714.
