Shirley Ruth Wood, formerly of Columbia and later New Market, MD, died January 27, 2012, under Hospice care at Sunrise Assisted Living in Frederick. She was 83. Her beloved husband of 57 years, Lloyd Wood, died in 2010.
She was born in San Francisco April 24, 1928, to Albert and Marjorie Schermesser, the second of their six children. Sure of her profession from childhood, she graduated as a registered nurse from St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in San Francisco in 1949. Continuing her studies in surgery techniques, she came to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. There, she met her future husband on a day cruise of the Chesapeake Bay. They married February 15, 1953, in San Francisco.
Mrs. Wood worked as an operating-room nurse as Mr. Wood's profession as a naval architect took them coast to coast. They lived in Delaware, then moved to Vallejo, CA, where they started their family and Mrs. Wood became a full-time mother to their four children. They moved to Connecticut, California again, and finally to Columbia, MD.. After raising her family, Mrs. Wood took refresher courses and resumed her nursing career at James Lawrence Kernan Hospital in Baltimore, where she worked for 15 years, retiring as head of Central Supply in 1990. After nearly 30 years in Columbia, they moved to New Market, where they lived for 10 years until Mr Wood's death.
Mrs. Wood enjoyed reading, especially celebrity and entertainment news, gardening, clothes shopping, and keeping night-owl hours to watch classic movies. She was the Bingo queen at her last home, Sunrise Assisted Living, where she found a renewed energy for life. Above all, she loved her family.
Mrs. Wood is survived by a daughter, Susan Alff, of Raleigh, NC; three sons, David Wood and his wife, Patty, of Taneytown, Paul Wood of New Market, and John Wood of Columbia; and three grandchildren, Ted Alff and Dawn and Brian Wood. She is also survived by her extended California family: sisters Marjorie Tovani, Michelle Hovespian, and Stephanie Thum; numerous nieces and nephews, and other kin. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers Albert Jr. and William Schermesser.
The family will receive friends from 2-3 PM on Saturday, February 4, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opposumtown Pike, Frederick, where a memorial service will begin at 3:00 PM.
