Shirley Virginia Miller

d. September 14, 2024

Frederick

Shirley Virginia (Jones) Miller died on September 14, 2024 peacefully at her home, surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of fifty-three years, at the time of his death, Herman Bernard Miller, who died April 20, 2004. She was a wonderful mother, wife and outstanding member of the Frederick community.

She was the daughter of the late John Pinkney Jones and Mary Violet (Smith) Jones, both of Frederick County, Maryland. Shirley was born in Frederick, where she remained all of her life. The Smith family was among the original settlers of Frederick County. George William Smith, her great, great-grandfather, founded Braddock Heights, Maryland, and the Hagerstown/Frederick Railroad (commonly known as the H&F Railway), as well as other Frederick establishments. He was one of the largest landowners at the time. Emma Smith, who gave the land for the Frederick Memorial Hospital, and Helen Smith, a well-known Frederick artist, were among her ancestors. On her paternal side, her father was a descendant of the Poole family, founders of Poolesville in Montgomery County.

She was a member of the Frederick Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and other historical societies, Beth Sholom Congregation, Beth Sholom Sisterhood, Council of Jewish Women, a life member of Hadassah and a life member of the Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. In addition to volunteering her time with the Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and Beth Sholom Synagogue, Shirley was an avid bridge player. She also enjoyed researching and updating genealogical records.

Surviving are her children: Dr. Robert Alan Miller and wife Sharon of Annapolis, Maryland and their children: Derek Miller and Sarah (Miller) Blaszczak and husband, Eric Blaszczak; Regina Lynn (Miller) Truitt and husband, Dr. Kenneth Truitt and their daughter, Julia Truitt of Short Hills, New Jersey; and Dr. Marcie Elizabeth (Miller) Lerner and husband Jeffrey Lerner of Montgomery Village, Maryland, and three grand-dogs: Daisy, Dallas, and Lillie. Also surviving are her sister, Eliza Medora (Jones) Myers of Frederick, MD and many nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her parents, her brother John H. Jones of Frederick, her brother Charles Basil Jones of Martinsburg, WV, and sisters Frances H. Hresko of Concord, CA, Marian Elizabeth Jones and Betty Darnell Jones of Frederick (the later two dying at the age of two and six, respectively.)
