The family of Robert E. (Bob) Smith wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude for the many acts of loving kindness extended to the family at Bob’s passing on January 18, 2012. Bob’s family thanks everyone for their prayers, hospital visits and Glade Valley Center visits, on line condolences,  cards, flowers, food, donations to the food bank in Walkersville and  donations to the Walkersville High School  athletic boosters club. The family also wishes to thank Stauffer funeral home for their outstanding professional service, the doctors and nurses at the Frederick Cancer Center and Frederick Memorial Hospital for their care of Bob and the staff the Glade Valley Center.


Mrs. Shirley E. Snowden, 72, of Walkersville, MD, passed away Friday, February 10, 2012, at her home after a lengthy battle with cancer. Shirley was born on April 23, 1939, to the late John Henry Smith, Jr and the late Helen Butler Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband Russell A. Snowden; brothers, Thomas W. Smith and Robert E. Smith; brothers-in-law Clabon Whittemore, Arthur Snowden, Jr, James Snowden, and Willard Davis; sisters-in-law Catherine Davis and Josephine Snowden.

Shirley graduated from Lincoln High School in Frederick and went on to graduate from Morgan State University with a degree in mathematics. She worked at Fort Detrick for a brief period and then went on to pursue a career in education as a 7th grade mathematics teacher in a variety of settings. Shirley also completed graduate work at Hood College. She retired in 1999 after teaching for 29 years.

Shirley was the past president and lifetime member of the Frederick Club of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s, Inc. She was also the Parliamentarian of the Mid-Atlantic District of NANBPW. She was the Queen Mother of the Red Hat Divas and a member of the Lincoln Alumni Association. She served as a member on the Eliminating the Achievement Gap Board of Directors, the Frederick Community Diversity Committee, and was a past trustee for the Community Foundation of Frederick County. Shirley was very active in her church, for example, she was the President of the United Methodist Women’s Organization, Lay member of the Baltimore Washington Conference, Chairperson of the PPRC, Superintendent of Sunday school and a member of the Volunteers in Mission Organization. Shirley loved to travel, read, spend time with family and friends, and care for Tipper and Buttercup.

Shirley is survived by children, William R. Snowden, Tampa, FL and Shirlisa A. Snowden(fiancé, William), Waldorf, MD; siblings, John H. Smith, III (Shirley), Alexandria, VA, Gordon Smith, Morristown, NJ, and Maria Whittemore, Frederick, MD. Other surviving family members include a devoted aunt, Clara Butler, Frederick, MD, aunts Sarah Butler, Louisville, KY and Dorothy Butler, Frederick, MD; brother-in-law, Calvin E. Snowden; sisters-in-law, Barbara Smith, Arlene Boyd, Patsy Snowden and JoAnne Snowden , all of Frederick, MD and Patsy Snowden of Lewistown, MD; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephew, great great nieces, great great nephews, and cousins. Shirley is also survived by her faithful companion Tipper, her grand dog, Buttercup, and many devoted friends.

The family of Shirley Snowden wishes to thank Dr. Kanan Hudhud, associates, nurses, and medical assistants at the Cancer Care Center of Frederick, all of the doctors, nurses, and CNAs at Frederick Memorial Hospital, and Geoff and Jill with Hospice of Frederick County, who treated and cared for Shirley during her illness. Heartfelt thanks to the members of the NANBPW Club, Inc., members of the Red Hat Divas, and members of Mt. Pleasant UMC for their untiring support throughout Shirley’s illness. The family also wishes to express their gratitude to everyone who supported Shirley and the family through prayers, cards, food, visits, phone calls, words of encouragement and devotion to making a difference for Shirley and her family throughout this journey.

A Christian wake will be held on Wednesday, February 15th at the funeral home from 6:00-9:00pm. The family will receive friends at that time. There will be an additional viewing on Thursday, February 16th from 10:00-11:00am before the Homegoing celebration at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to be made to Mt.
