Shirley Metz

Shirley Cronise Metz, 84, of Boonsboro, MD. passed away on February 22, 2019. She was the wife of Gerald F. Metz for over 66 years.

She was born on October 27, 1934 in the then “Sleepy Little Town of Boonsboro, MD.” She was the daughter of the late Leo “Mike” and Ardell (Phillips) Cronise.

Shirley graduated from Boonsboro High School, class of 1952. Through the years, Shirley worked at the Cronise Florist business and also the Cronise Family Fruit and Produce business. She later became involved in local government as well as civic activities and organizations. Shirley was the first woman elected to the Boonsboro Town Council, serving three terms. She was also the first and only woman to serve on the Boonsboro Municipal Utilities Commission, serving for twenty years. She was a member of the Boonsboro Historical Society and served on the Boonsboro Free Library Board since 1986.

Shirley was a member of the Boonsboro Ambulance and Rescue Service, Inc. and served on their Board of Directors, Red Feather #59 of Williamsport Redmen, South County Democratic Club and the Boonsboro American Legion Auxiliary Post 10. In May of 2014, Shirley was honored to receive the “Life of Leadership” award by The Women at the Table of Hagerstown.

Shirley was an avid reader and enjoyed spending time at the Boonsboro Free Library.

In addition to her husband she is survived by her three children, daughter Marcia Beall and husband Rick, son Glenn Metz, and daughter Brenda “Boo” Metz and Rick Leggett. She is also survived by grandson Brian Beall and wife Katie, brother Carroll “Buck” Cronise and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In accordance with her wishes, there will be no viewing. Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Boonsboro Ambulance and Rescue Service, Inc., PO Box 7, Boonsboro, MD. 21713, or to the Boonsboro Free Library Board, 401 Potomac St. Boonsboro, MD. 21713.
