Mrs. Shirley Baker Graham, age 81, of Walkersville, MD, died peacefully on Sunday, January 1, 2012 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the loving wife of the late G. Arthur Graham who died on May 7, 2009. They were married on September 24, 1949. Born Shirley Mae “Sissy” Baker in Frederick on October 12, 1930 she was the daughter of the late Harry Russell Baker and Viola Caroline Staley Baker.
Shirley was a member of the Glade United Church of Christ, Walkersville. She was a 1950 graduate of the Frederick Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. Her nursing career included time spent working at Frederick Memorial in the labor and delivery unit, as an aide/school nurse at Liberty Elementary, the nurse for Dr. Gilson Meadors, and ended at the Frederick County Health Department.
Shirley was a very caring, loving and gentle mother and grandmother. She was the mother that every kid wished was their mother when her daughters were growing up. Her home was always open to everyone who needed a sympathetic ear, gentle encouragement, or milk and cookies on a cold winters day. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends including her close friend Linda Misner.
She is survived by daughters Patricia A. Graham and husband Dean W. Bowers of Walkersville, and Susan G. Smith and husband Richard L. Smith of Frederick; two grandchildren Katie M. Roberts and husband Gregory S. Roberts, and Drew G. Smith, all of Frederick. She is also survived by sisters Dorothy L. Michael of Charles Town, WV, Carolyn B. Gastley and husband Ralph L. Gastley, Jr. of Frederick, Sharon A. Thompson and husband John G. Thompson of Knoxville, MD, brother Cyril R. Baker of Frederick, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers Harry W. Baker, R. Linwood Baker, and an infant sister Linda.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 3 from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday, January 4 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Stauffer Funeral Home, 40 Fulton Avenue, Walkersville, MD. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 5, 2012 at Glade United Church of Christ, 21 Fulton Ave., Walkersville, MD. The Rev. Phillip Curran and Rev. Gerald Hanberry will officiate. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Woodsboro, MD. Serving as pallbearers will be Richard L. Smith, Drew G. Smith, Dean W. Bowers, Gregory S. Roberts, Joseph R. Kula and Christopher L. Masemore.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Glade United Church of Christ at the above address, or a charity of one’s choice.
