Mrs. Shirley A. Derrenbacher, 79 of Frederick, MD passed away Friday, February 10, 2012 at Frederick Memorial Hospital.  She was the beloved wife of the late Edward B. Derrenbacher.

Born July 28, 1932 in Catonsville, MD she was the daughter of the late Roy K. and Erna Dimling Schwartz.  She moved to Johnsville, MD in 1942 where she enjoyed life on the farm as a young girl.

Mrs. Derrenbacher graduated from Frederick High School.  While attending high school Shirley excelled in sports such as field ball and basketball where she was part of the state championship teams that traveled all over the state.  Shirley attended University of MD from 1950-54 earning her degree in Physical Education.  During college she continued competing in basketball, field hockey, synchronized swimming and tennis.  She was also a member of the Alpha Ki Omega sorority.  Shirley was married in 1954 and began teaching at Frederick High School.  She continued teaching at Emmitsburg School part time while her children were born and then  in 1965 began  teaching at Linganore High where she became a well known coach and was respected by her students.  After Linganore High School she left to teach at New Market Middle School where she retired in 1988.  In her spare time Shirley was an avid gardener and canner, horse breeder and 4-H leader.  Shirley and her husband Ed enjoyed working on the farm with their sons, traveling to Florida and going on cruises to Alaska, the Caribbean and Northern Europe.

She is survived by her children Kenneth Derrenbacher and wife Carolyn of Dayton, MD, Stephen Derrenbacher and wife Ruth Ann of Woodsboro, MD; grandchildren Timothy, Michael, Rachael, Perry and Shawn Derrenbacher.

She is preceded in death by Roy K. Schwarz, Jr.

The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick on Monday, February 13, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9PM where a funeral service will be held Tuesday, February 14 at 10AM.  Pastor Dan Fabricatore will officiate.

Interment will follow at Druid Hill Cemetery.
