Shirley Connelly, 86, of Mt. Airy, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on September 20, 2024. She now rests in the arms of the Lord. She was born on July 11, 1938, to David and Mildred Cole. Starting at a young age, Shirley demonstrated a strong work ethic, taking various jobs from a local bakery in Rockville to Little Pigs restaurant to Giant Food. After starting a family, she entered the banking field where she worked for over 40 years, retiring as an assistant vice president of Sandy Spring National Bank.
Cherished by all who knew her, she had an immeasurable devotion to and love for her family. She was a very special Mema. She enjoyed reading, antiquing, sewing, decorating, celebrating Christmas, watching cooking shows, drinking coffee, and listening to classic country music.
Shirley is survived by and will be forever missed by her children and their spouses: Gwen and Dwight, Sherry and Jack, Don and Angie; grandchildren: Sheena, Rob, Nicole and Alex, Crystal, Cindy, Jonathan and Erin, Abby; great-grandchildren: Caleb, Robbie (RJ), Ryan, Jonathan Jr.; siblings and spouses: Louise and Hayden, Tommy and Kathy, Eddie, Larry and Gail; her dear cat, Snoopy; along with many special nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 60 years, Robert; parents; siblings and spouses: Joe, Annette and Silas, and Mary Jean.
Service and interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
