Mrs. Shirley A. Clark, 78, passed away Sunday, December 29, 2013 at her home in Myersville, MD, after a lengthy battle with mesothelioma, an incurable form of lung cancer.
She was born March 26, 1935 in Lonaconing, MD., the daughter of the late Andrew and Hilda Stafford Burt.
Mrs. Clark was raised in Lonaconing and attended Central High School. She studied piano for years, and while she was in high school, she accompanied the school choir on piano. Additionally, she was the organist for the choir at the First Presbyterian Church for many years when she was a student. Mrs. Clark was the 1953 valedictorian of Central High School, where she met her future husband. She followed in the footsteps of her mother, and upon graduation, began working at the C & P Telephone Company in Cumberland. In 1954, she married Raymond Clark, and the couple made their home in Frederick, Md. She continued to work for several years in the business office of C&P Telephone in Frederick, MD.
After the birth of her daughter, she became a homemaker. As an avid gardener, she tended to multiple flower gardens surrounding her home, including a rose garden filled with beautiful, prize-winning roses. She collected antiques, spending many weekends at antique shops in the Maryland countryside looking for dishes and glassware.
For several years in the early 70s, Mrs. Clark was a parent volunteer to fourth grade students at North Frederick Elementary School. In the mid-70s, she joined the Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary as a hospital volunteer. In 1977, she was selected to serve as the Assistant Financial Secretary to the Auxiliary, and in June 1978, she was selected to serve as the Morning Lobby Chairman. In that capacity, she coordinated the daily coverage of the hospital lobby by volunteers. She resigned from the Auxiliary in June 1979, after logging 806.5 hours of volunteer work, to move the family to southern Maryland for her husband’s job relocation.
In retirement, she and her husband returned to Frederick County, settling in Myersville in 1989. She spent much time decorating her new home and getting reacquainted with the charming lifestyle of Frederick. For many of the past 25 years, Mrs. Clark and her husband enjoyed spending the cold winter months of February and March in Sarasota, Florida.
Mrs. Clark was diagnosed with mesothelioma in December 2011 and remained active during her treatments for the cancer until the Fall of 2013.
Mrs. Clark is survived by her husband of 59 years, Raymond, a retired civil engineer of the MD State Highway administration, and her daughter, Karen, Pasadena, MD. An infant son preceded her in death.
Services and interment will be private.
