Shelva Jean Rhodes Milburn, age 68, of Hagerstown, MD, with her family by her side, went with the Lord on Saturday, May 31, 2008, after a brave and courageous battle with cancer.
Born on February 9, 1940, at the home of her grandmother in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of Ellis "Buck" Rhodes Sr. of Hagerstown, and the late Myrtle Cromer Rhodes, who passed away on January 5, 1989.
Jean was a homemaker. Prior to her retirement, she and her husband owned C.L. Milburn and Son construction and Happy Trails Campground. Jean previously worked at the stocking factory and silk mill in Williamsport.
She attended St. James Brethren Church. She was a member of the Williamsport High School class of 1958. Jean was the past president and member of TOPS Chapter 77. She also was a member of the Red Hat Society Mt. Mommas, Redmen Pocahontas', and Quilters' Guild. While raising four children, she was a leader of the Downsville 4-H Club. Jean was an early officer of the Y-ME Organization.
Her hobbies included crocheting, quilting, cooking, baking, gardening, sewing, cake decorating, miniature golf, playing cards and camping. Even while confined to a wheelchair, Jean enjoyed Disney World as though she was a kid again. She enjoyed planning all the family gatherings and showing what the meaning of family is about.
Jean is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Charles "Lester" Milburn, whom she married on March 9, 1957; one sister, Linda Rhodes Richardson and husband Dennie of New Hampshire; three daughters, Teresa Kelly and husband Dennis, Glenda Grimm and husband Wayne, and Christie Toloso and husband Dan; one son, David Milburn; nine grandchildren, Joshua Farley, Amanda Grimm Faith and husband Terry, Sarah Kelly and fianc�' Jason Bradley, Steven Grimm, Suzanne Kelly Reid and husband Joshua, Jamie O'Connell, Ryan Kelly, Ashley O'Connell and Brandon Toloso; her dog, Sweetie, and many family friends. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ellis "Bucky" Rhodes and Franklin Rhodes.
Funeral services will be held 2 P.M. Wednesday, June 4, at St. James Brethren Church in St. James, MD. The Rev. Brian Moore will officiate. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Williamsport.
The family will welcome family and friends on Tuesday, June 3, from 1 to 3 P.M. and 6 to 8 P.M. at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, PA, in Boonsboro.
