After the most courageous 2 ½ year battle with cancer, Scott Michael Obitts made his grand entrance when he entered the kingdom of Heaven on Friday, October 18, 2024, at the age of 43, surrounded by his family and friends. Scott faced his cancer journey fully embracing his mantra, “No Bad Days”.
Scott was born in Hagerstown, Maryland to Terry and Karen (Phillips) Obitts on September 24, 1981. From the moment he was born, he was ready to take on life and all that it had to offer. Those who had the honor of knowing him will never forget his contagious smile, his boisterous laugh, his love of the next adventure and how he could command a room with his presence and storytelling skills.
Scott resided in Boonsboro, Maryland with his devoted wife, of 22 years, Stephanie (Strite) Obitts and their son, Ryan Scott Obitts and daughter, Katelyn Marie Obitts. He was a 1999 graduate of Boonsboro High School and left an indelible mark on the Boonsboro community. Scott is also survived by his sister, Christina (Dan) Elgin; and brother, Drew Obitts, as well as his in-laws, Darrel and Penny Strite; and sister-in-law, Becky (Brian) Shumaker. He was very proud of his role as Uncle Scott to Lexi, Aidan, Kendalyn, Ellie, Jayce, Jaxon and Graydon.
He attended New Life Fellowship in Sharpsburg, Maryland. The Lord led him on several mission trips, including a trip to Africa in 2011, where he taught the villagers the cha-cha slide. He was an electrician by trade, following in the footsteps of his father, Terry, and working for many years in the family electrical contracting business, Terry’s Electric Company. He balanced this with being a full-time deejay as owner of Knights of the Turntable. If Scott deejayed your wedding or event, you never forgot him and everyone had a fun and memorable time. Later, he became a top salesperson as regional manager for Dealership for Life in Boonsboro, which helped fuel his love of travel while making friends all over the world.
Scott’s passion was coaching. He loved “his boys”. If you were ever coached by Scott, you became one of “his boys”. Scott started his coaching years with Sharpsburg Little League baseball. He was instrumental in his community of Boonsboro with their BAAA basketball program, which included expanding the program at the high school level, giving the older boys the chance to still play ball. With the help and support of A&B Basketball, he also started Team 301 travel basketball league. Much of Scott’s free time was spent coaching and traveling to tournaments with “his boys” and many of those boys will forever miss Scott’s mentorship as he developed their skills and taught them how to win and lose with grace. Scott also had a knack for giving pep talks to “his girls” at Boonsboro High School cheerleading competitions of which his daughter Katelyn was part of.
Scott was a die-hard Baltimore Ravens fan and spent many Sundays at the home games with his father, Terry. It was no surprise that former Ravens player Ray Rice attended his annual No Bad Days golf tournament recently to show his support for one of the Ravens’ biggest fans. Scott was a fan of the Baltimore Orioles and enjoyed golfing. He was also a member of the Boonsboro American Legion.
