Sara Catherine Rusk peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, January 11, 2014, after a two-year battle with cancer. A gracious lady who cared for others before herself, particularly her husband John; son and daughter- in- law, Joseph N. and Amy Haynes; grandchildren Nathan and Carissa Haynes; step daughter Michele McNeill and her children Julie and Sean Lemieux; step daughter Alison McNeill; and her brother and sister- in- law Nathan and Sarah Phipps, Jr.
She was born on September 7, 1944 in Chandler, OK to the late Nathan L. and Sarah Phipps Sr., and moved to middle Tennessee at the age of eleven where she grew up on the family farm. As an adult she moved to Maryland where she lived the last four decades of her life.
Sara’s greatest joy was serving her Lord in anyway she could which included forty years of teaching in Christian Schools. She loved teaching her young students how to read. She was always active in a number of churches in Rockville, Germantown and Frederick as her home location changed. She participated in many outreach ministries locally and out of the country sharing her faith and encouragement to all.
Southern Gospel music concerts, attending any activity involving her children or grandchildren even cattle shows are but a few of her favorite ways of occupying her spare time.
Sara was particularly thankful for her rich Christian heritage since her family first came to America in 1628, which lead her to her membership in the DAR. She found inspiration and strength in the faithfulness of her parents and of John’s parents in the lives they lead and the examples they set. For all this she continually thanked God throughout her life.
Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her sister Mary Ann Phipps, nephew Wesley Phipps and her first husband Wendell Haynes.
Memorial Services will be held at South End Baptist Church, 506 Carrollton Dr, Frederick, MD 21701 on Saturday January 18, 2014 at 2:30pm. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Sara’s name to Samaritans Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607 or samaritanspurse.org
