Sara Evans

June 2, 1921 — April 12, 2010

Sara K. (Yates) Evans, 88, of Boonsboro, Maryland, passed peacefully on Monday, April 12, 2010 at Charlotte's Home in Boonsboro.

Born on June 2, 1921 in Rockingham, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Sul P. and Pauline (Robbins) Yates.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands, William R. Pumphrey, Sr. and William H. Evans.

Sara was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church.

During World War II Mrs. Evans worked for the Railroad and then was employed as the Executive Secretary to the County Commissioner in Prince George County.  In later years she was the Executive Secretary for the Chief Executive Officer at Prince George County Hospital in Cheverly, Maryland.

Sara was a Master Needlework Artist and was a lifelong member of the P.E.O., Chapter Y, in Washington, DC.

She is survived by her son, William R. Pumphrey, Jr. of Littlestown, Pennsylvania; two daughters, Katherine Y. Elliott of Fairplay, Maryland and Phyllis D. Callaway of Boonsboro; and one sister Florine Barnett of O'Fallon, Missouri.  She is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Sara was preceded in death by her two brothers, Andrew and Ned Yates; and her sister Nell Huntsucker.

A funeral ceremony will be held at 12 noon on Friday, April 16, 2010 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 18313 Lappans Road, Boonsboro, Maryland.  Rev. Anne O. Weatherholt will officiate.  Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Williamsport.  Family will  receive friends at 10 a.m. on Friday at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike in Boonsboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Avenue, Hagerstown, Maryland, 21742.
