Sandy Kosek

September 23, 1958 — April 4, 2018

Sandy (Broome) Kosek, of Thurmont MD, passed from this life into the loving arms of her waiting Lord at 6:40AM, April 4, 2018 at home, holding hands with her husband and friend by her side.

She was born on September 23, 1958 and was the daughter of Charlotte and Albert Broome. Her family emigrated from Canada to Silver Spring, Maryland when she was a toddler, and Sandy lived in the USA for the rest of her life.  Sandy is one of 6 children: Janet, Don, Doug, Sandy, Christine, and Gwyneth.

The family settled in Kensington Maryland and Sandy graduated from Albert Einstein High School in 1976.  She was an alto in the school’s Madrigal Singers and the school Chorus under training of Ms. Proctor.  Sandy met Dan, her future husband during her senior year while working at a fabric store.

Dan and Sandy married in October of 1977 and initially lived in Silver Spring. They later moved to Germantown, where she had their first child and after holding him for the first time, Sandy said she had found her niche in life.  The family moved to Walkersville in 1987 where both the girls were added to the family.  Sandy was active in church life and in the Frederick chapter of CHEN, the Christian Home Educators Network.

A few years later the family moved to Stevensville, Montana for Dan’s work. It was a wondrous time that the family enjoyed until the loss of Sandy’s parents, Charlotte and Al, along with Dan’s father, Ed Kosek of Frederick.  After the tragedy of 9/11, they moved to Missoula, Montana.

The family temporarily relocated to Mountain View, California for Dan’s work, then back to the Frederick area in 2006.  The family settled in Thurmont and has lived there for the past 12 years.  Sandy and her family are deeply involved in the Gettysburg church of Christ.

She was the devoted wife of Dan Kosek for over 40 years and the loving mother of three children: Robert, Hannah, and Bethany. She loved her family, her church family, and friends across the country. She was a wonderful Christian wife, mother, and friend to all.  Sandy lived what she believed and taught—for all to see her Savior in her example.

Sandy relished sharing her love of God and her joy in natural foods and health with everyone. Sandy was knowledgeable in nutritional healing and home remedies, and loved to help people use food choices, homeopathic remedies, and supplements instead of drugs.

In April of 2016, Sandy was diagnosed with stage-4 colon cancer during emergency surgery at GBMC Hospital in Baltimore.  Sandy determined that since the traditional Radiation/Chemotherapy options offered little chance of recovery and a terrible quality of life, she would continue with alternative therapies.  These therapies provided her with excellent health and the ability to be present for the 24 months following her surgery.  She was present and fully engaged with her family and church until the day before she passed.

The family will receive friends from 5-7pm on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main Street, Thurmont, MD 21788.  A Celebration of Life will begin at 7pm at the funeral home. The family will continue to receive friends following the service.
