Lisbon
Sandra “Sandy” Lynn Martin, 77, of Lisbon, Maryland, entered her eternal rest on April, 26, 2024.
Sandy was born in Lima, Ohio on August 9, 1946 to the late Harold and Mabel Newcomer. Growing up in Lima, she spent much of her formative years with her dear Aunt Carmen and Grandma Daisy. She also enjoyed visits to the farm of her maternal grandparents, Dwight and Agnes Newell.
Sandy graduated from Lima Senior High in 1964 and continued her education at Bluffton College, where she studied music and math. After graduation, she moved to Cleveland to work for the Social Security Administration. Her career with SSA allowed her to relocate to Baltimore in 1970 to the Woodlawn office. It was there that she met her late husband of 44 years, John R. Martin.
After having her children, Sandy transitioned her career to her true passion, education. She spent many years working for the Home and Hospital program of Baltimore City Public Schools. When she relocated to her home in Lisbon, she continued to teach for the local Home and Hospital program as well as becoming a private piano teacher to dozens of budding musicians. She later served as principal and math and science teacher at Mt. Airy Mennonite School.
Sandy was an avid bird watcher, as long as they stayed a respectable distance away. She also enjoyed puzzles of all kinds, walking, knitting Irish sweaters, reading, playing piano, bowling, and rooting for the Baltimore Orioles, even in the bad seasons. She had previously enjoyed being active in the Howard County 4-H program with the Dairy Goat Club. She was an active member of St Michaels Parish of Poplar Springs.
Sandy is survived by her three children, John Martin, Beth Martin (Alex Gammon), and Mary Anne, and her beloved grandchild, Riva. She is also survived by her sister Mary Schnegg (Jim), brothers Randy Newcomer (Natalie) and Scott Newcomer (Lisa), as well as many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at St Michaels Parish of Poplar Springs on May 7. Visitation will be held at Stauffers Funeral Home in Mount Airy in May 6. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the Catholic Relief Services at https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=https%3a%2f%2fwww.crs.org&c=E,1,qQ1GjOglo5123ZgK0HWM36slnd9YiZih7ZA0vvb2ohDpgBNbRfpqbvTzgF0xF9qtb5NuCXT007lydNFcYuwM6I2Gbv_L34xj3aqTYtS9C9BMRFd_AxfeDz9uoxU,&typo=1
