With great sadness, the Judge family announces the passing of Samuel Dunn Judge, who died quietly at home on December 16, 2016, after a short battle with cancer. He passed away surrounded by his wife of 58 years, Judy Ellen Judge, and his two daughters, Martha Ann Jarvinen and Mary Lynn Judge Hubbard. Sam was a talented craftsman, an accomplished engineer, and a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather to his family. He was admired for his sense of humor, his charm, and his abiding kindness to everyone he knew.
Born October 14, 1935, Sam grew up in Virginia Beach, Virginia with his parents, Elsie and Johnnie Judge, and his two brothers, Fred and John Judge. He graduated from Maury High School. He met his wife Judy while they were both in college, he at Virginia Tech and she at Sullins College. They married in 1958 and raised two beautiful daughters. Together, they followed their careers to many communities around the country over the course of their long marriage. They settled in Keedysville, Maryland, where they lived for 20 years and Judy still resides.
Sam had a distinguished career as a professional engineer. From 1960 to 1967 he served as a First Lieutenant Artillery in the United States Army, receiving training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he worked for the Federal government serving as a Deputy Director/Program Engineer, Systems Acquisition Division, Amphibious Ship and Strategic Program Office of NAVSEA before retiring briefly in 1992. He started a second career as a consultant, and retired again in 2011 from AOC, an engineering firm based in McClean, Virginia. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech in 1959, and a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Catholic University of America in 1982. During his retirement he honed his wood turning skills at the Mid-Maryland Wood Turners Club and in his own workshop.
Sam cherished his family, and his family adored him. They are as follows: Judy Judge, wife; Martha and Eric Jarvinen, daughter and son-in-law; Eliza, Amelia, and Tom Jarvinen, grandchildren; Mary Judge Hubbard and Dave Hubbard, daughter and son-in-law; Joshua Bond and Hudson Bond, grandson and great grandson; Justin and Dawn Bond, grandson and granddaughter-in-law.
The family would like to thank, Hospice of Washington County, for their exceptional caregiving and support
