Mrs. Ruth E. ( Long ) Singer, of Frederick, died on Sunday, January 18th, 2009 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband Elmer W. Singer on April 25th, 1980.
She was born in Frederick County a daughter of the late Elmer E. Long, Sr. and Bertha M.. ( Gerrick ) Long.
Mrs. Singer was a member of the Frederick Church of the Brethren where she served several terms as president of the Home Builders Sunday School Class, she organized the Home Builders Hymn Sing with whom she sang at local nursing homes. She was also a member of their Mary Martha Guild.
Mrs. Singer was past president and member of the Montevue Auxiliary , charter member of the Citizens Nursing Home (where she was very active), charter member of the Civinette Club, active charter member of the Northampton Manor Nursing Home , member of the Salvation Army Ladies Auxiliary, charter member of the Friends of Frederick Auxiliary, the Monocacy Village Civic Assoc, past president of the Democratic Club, member of the Junior Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary, the County Fire Co. and charter member of the Little League of Frederick.
Mrs. Singer was employed as the hostess for many years at the Francis Scott Key Hotel. In 1968 she joined her husband operating their business City Auto Parts, which she continued to manage after his death until its sale.
Surviving are one sister Beatrice Shuff, Frederick, nieces; Pat Schoonover, Frederick, Nelda Burdette , Damascus, Carol Staub, Hagerstown, Darlene Zimmerman, Murrells Inlet, SC and Jane Way, Walkersville, nephews; C. William Shuff, Jr. , Frederick, Michael Long, Huntingtown, MD, Elmer E. Long, III, New Bern, NC, Preston E. Long, Frederick, Joseph E. Zimmerman, Baltimore, Herman Lookingbill, Woodsboro, a dear and special friend, Doris Dougherty and husband Donald, Thurmont, a sister-in-law, Charlotte Long, Solomons, MD She is also survived by numerous great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister Evelyn Zimmerman and brothers, Elmer E. Long, Jr and Preston E. Long.
Visitation: Family will receive friends at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, on Thursday, January 22, from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Services: Services will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at the Frederick Church of the Brethren, 201 Fairview Ave. with Rev. Dr. Paul Mundey officiating. Interment in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
