Ruth Duvall

December 10, 1926 — April 27, 2015

Mrs. Ruth Oland Duvall, 88, of Damascus, Maryland, died April 27, 2015, in the comfort of her home. She was the wife of the late Edward Boyer Duvall who died January 4, 1996. Born December 10, 1926 in Brookeville, Maryland, she was a daughter of the late Carlton Simon Oland and Georgia Nicholson Oland.

Ruth was known for her love of cooking and especially her homemade rolls which she enjoyed making for her family on special occasions and also the bake sale table at the Damascus Methodist Church dinners. She also loved bowling at the former Damascus Bowling Alley and Mt. Airy Bowling Lanes where she enjoyed the company of many friends. As a member of the Damascus Travel Club, Ruth and Ed enjoyed the many places they visited as well as the friendships forged along the way. She loved all her children and had a special place in her heart for her seven grandchildren.

Surviving are her six children, Lin Phelps and husband Barry of Williamsburg, Virginia, Allen Duvall and wife Hilda of Myersville, Stephen Duvall of Damascus, Deborah Duvall of Monrovia, Karen Jordan and husband John of Adamstown, and Timothy Duvall and wife Kim of Westminster. Also surviving are her beloved grandchildren Christopher Phelps and fiancé Amy Johnson of Salem, Virginia, Jonathan Phelps of Frederick, Lance Duvall and fiancé Alanna Cohen of Frederick, Valerie Pickett and husband Eric of Mt. Airy, Hailey Duvall, of Westminster, Lindsay Duvall of Arlington, Virginia, and Grant Duvall of Westminster.

Also surviving is her sister Carolyn Mullinix of Frederick, sisters-in-law Velma Oland of Frederick, Shirley Zimmerman of Walkersville and brother-in-law Robert M. Duvall and wife Lois of Dover, New Hampshire, numerous nieces, nephews, many friends, as well as her caretakers Gina and Vidal who were always by her side and became like family to Ruth and her children.

Ruth is preceded in death by brothers Simon Craver Oland and Douglas Oland, sister Marilyn Green, brothers-in-law Elwood Mullinix, Paul “Buck” Duvall, Gerald Duvall, Rodney Duvall, William “Billy” Duvall, and J. Trego Zimmerman; sisters-in-law Margaret M. Duvall, Miriam Duvall, Margaret W. Duvall, and Mary Virginia Dietz.

The family will receive friends from 3-5 and 7-9 pm on Sunday, May 3, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E Ridgeville Blvd., Mt. Airy where funeral services  will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, May 4, with Dr. Norris E. Belcher of The Church of the Open Door, Westminster officiating. Interment will be at the Damascus Methodist Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Montgomery Hospice, 1355 Piccard Drive, Suite 100, Rockville, Maryland 20850 and put Ruth Duvall’s name in the notation on the check or to the National Parkinson’s Foundation Fund.  Make check payable to Medstar Georgetown Hospital and mail to Georgetown University Hospital, 3800 Reservoir Road, N.W. Washington, D.C. 20007, Attn: Office of Philanthropy. In the notation please put Ruth Duvall’s name and National Parkinson’s Foundation Fund.
