Russell Gordon

Russell E. Gordon, 86, of Woodbine, passed away a proud World War II veteran on July 4, 2013 at Montgomery General Hospital, with red, white, and blue in his heart. Born February 17, 1927 in Washington, D.C., he was the son of John Mills Gordon, Sr. and Louise Mae Seek Gordon. He is survived by his loving wife, June Burroughs Gordon; his two devoted children, Kathleen Gordon Weddle (husband, Patrick) and Christina Gordon Wamsley (husband, John); four adoring grandchildren, Heidi Weddle Pepin (husband, John), Jared Wamsley, Sarah Weddle and Jennifer Wamsley; and two great-grandchildren, Brenna and Michael Pepin. He is also survived by one brother, Donald R. Gordon; and three sisters, Evelyn Gordon Mullinix, Beverly Gordon Green and Dorothy Gordon Rosensteel. He was preceded in death by one brother, John Mills Gordon, Jr. and one sister, Hazel Gordon Mullinix.  Growing up, he attended Lisbon School in Lisbon, MD and worked hard on his family’s farm. He was honored to serve in the Navy from February 10, 1945 through July 12, 1946. He spent wartime in the South Pacific aboard the U.S.S. Adirondack and U.S.S. Elmore. After returning from the service, he attended the Apprenticeship School of Local Union NO. 132, where he was a carpenter foreman and superintendent until his retirement in 1989. He was a member of Jennings Chapel United Methodist Church; the Carpenters’ Local Union NO. 132; American Legion, Post 68, Olney, MD; a charter member of the Lisbon Volunteer Fire Department; and the Masons, Prudence Lodge 190 A.F. & A.M. Russell will be remembered as a man who loved to travel, to garden, to play the lottery, to grumble about the Orioles, to smoke a good cigar and, above all else, to spend time with his family. Family will receive friends at Stauffer Funeral Homes, P.A., 8 East Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy, MD 21771 on Sunday, July 7, 2013 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. A service to celebrate the wonderful life of Russell will be held on Monday, July 8, 2013, 10 AM at Jennings Chapel United Methodist Church, 2601 Jennings Chapel Road, Woodbine, MD 21797.In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Jennings Chapel United Methodist Church, 2601 Jennings Chapel Rd., Woodbine, MD 21797; or the American Legion Post 68 Scholarship Fund, P.O.
