Roy William Purcell
January 5, 1918 — March 24, 2010
Mr. Roy William Purcell, 92, of Sabillasville, MD., died on Wednesday March 24, 2010 at Heartfields Assisted Living in Frederick. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Audrey Baugher Purcell.
Born on January 5, 1918 in Crisfield, Maryland, he was the son of the late Percy Oliver and Margaret Matthews Purcell.
Mr. Purcell moved to Baltimore, MD., with his family in 1937 at the age of 19. He came to the Sabillasville area in 1942 to receive treatment for TB. While receiving treatment for TB he met and later married his treatment nurse, and stayed in the area. In 1951 he attended barber school in Baltimore, MD., and took over a shop at Victor Cullen Sanitarium around 1952. During his career, he also worked in a barber shop at Long Meadow Shopping Center, Hagerstown, MD., but ended his career with a shop in Thurmont, MD. After retirement he continued to barber part-time at Citizens Nursing Home in Frederick until the age of 80.
In retirement he enjoyed woodworking, his grandchildren and fishing and in the last ten years painting. He was a member and Sunday School teacher at the Deerfield United Methodist Church. One of his most memorable experiences was his trip to the Holy Lands with other members of the congregation. He was a member of the Full Gospel Businessmen International.
Surviving are one daughter, Suzanne Purcell Davidson and husband Doug of Alexandria, VA., and one son , Steve Purcell and his wife Karen of Thurmont; three grandchildren, Ryan Purcell, Sarah Purcell LeGore and Kyle Davidson. 4 great grandchildren. Sister in law Bertha Rowe.
He was the oldest of seven children and all predeceased him.
Visitation: The family will receive friends on from 2-4 & 7-9pm on Friday March 26, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main Street, Thurmont, MD.
Services: Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday March 27, at 11:00am. Pastor Barry Taylor will officiate. Interment will be in Weller Cemetery, Thurmont.
