Roy Joseph Wivell, Jr., 66, of Emmitsburg, MD, passed away surrounded by his family on Tuesday, November 1, 2016 after a hard fought battle with cancer.
Born September 4, 1950 in Emmitsburg, he was the son of the late Roy Joseph Wivell, Sr. and Helen Louise (Guise) Wivell.
Roy was a 1968 graduate of St. Joe's High School. He worked at Mason Dixon Farms for over 47 years. He started as a general farm worker doing all jobs. He is most notably known as the leader of the harvest crew. Roy set the bar for standards for the people he worked with. Mason Dixon Farms is most appreciative of this dedication and his treating the farm as it were his own.
He was a member of St. Anthony's Church in Emmitsburg.
In his free time, Roy loved spending time with his family. He always looked forward to the annual Wivell "Savage" camping trip he took with his sons, grandson, brothers, and many nephews. In his younger years, he played softball in Emmitsburg. Roy also enjoyed playing horseshoes. His love of horseshoes was obvious by the many trophies he won. He also passed this love down to his children.
He was also involved with Emmitsburg Little League for many years, including player agent, equipment manager and umpire. He also served as president from 1993-1995, where he started the tee-ball and minor league teams, and added a press box to the concessions stand.
Roy is survived by his loving wife, Rose Marie (Fisher) Wivell. They were married on April 24, 1971. He is also survived by three children, Kim Wivell of Frederick, MD, Jason Wivell of Fairfield, PA, and Josh Wivell and wife Jennifer of Fairfield, PA; and one grandchild, Tyler. He was preceded in death by one son, Russell Allen Wivell on November 13, 2002.
Roy was the youngest of 20 children. He is survived by seven brothers and their spouses, Bernard Wivell of Rocky Ridge, MD, Donald Wivell of Covington, PA, Thomas Wivell (Mary Jo) of Columbia, MD, Paul Wivell (Mary) of Seven Valleys, PA, David Wivell (Betty) of Emmitsburg, Richard Wivell (Pat) of Fairfield, PA, and Samuel Wivell (Jocelyn) of Emmitsburg; and four sisters and their spouses, Helen Reaver (Edward) of Emmitsburg, Therese Topper (Phil) of Emmitsburg, Genevieve Little (Ronnie) of Mercersburg, PA, and Joan Matthew (John) of Frederick.
He was preceded in death by six brothers, James, Joseph, Charles, Henry, Robert, and Baby Roy Wivell; and two sisters, Margaret Fullman and Patricia Hoff.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main St., Thurmont, MD.
A memorial Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 10, 2016 from St. Anthony Shrine Parish, 16150 St. Anthony Rd., Emmitsburg.
Inurnment will follow in Emmitsburg Memorial Cemetery.
